When you need a curved stair lift rather than a straight one

A curved stair lift is for any staircase that does not run in one clean flight: a quarter or half turn, a bend, an intermediate landing, or a full spiral. The defining difference is the rail. On a straight stair lift the rail is a stock section cut to length. On a curved stair lift the rail is fabricated to your staircase from measurements taken in your home, which is why no two are alike.

The payoff is that the rider travels from the bottom of the stairs to the upper floor in one continuous ride, with no transfer at the landing and no second lift to get on and off.

Why curved stair lifts take longer and cost more

Both come down to that custom rail. After the free in-home assessment, the measurements go to the manufacturer and the rail is built for your stairs, so there is a lead time between measuring and installing that a straight lift does not have. Installation day itself is longer too. It is still an installation rather than a remodel — the rail fixes to the stair treads, not to your walls — but it is a bigger job.

Because the rail is bespoke, a curved stair lift is built for one staircase. It does not transfer to another home the way a straight lift can, which is worth knowing if you are weighing a move.

How the curved models above differ

Every curved stair lift on this page will get you up a turning staircase. The differences that usually decide it:

• Rail design. Some use a slim single-tube rail, others a twin-rail system. Single-tube rails are chosen for how little they intrude visually; twin-rail designs are often favoured on tight, complex turns.
• Weight capacity. It varies more across curved models than straight ones — the Handicare Freecurve is rated to 275 lb, the AmeriGlide Rave Curved HD to 350 lb.
• Maximum rail length. Long or multi-flight staircases rule some models out. Rail limits run from around 114 ft on the Freecurve to 164 ft on the Rave Curved HD.
• Warranty. Coverage differs by manufacturer, and some cover the rail and powertrain for longer than the parts. Each model page has the specifics.

Curved stair lift questions

Is a curved chair lift the same thing?

Yes. Chair lift, stair lift, stairlift and stair chair all describe a powered seat that rides a rail up your staircase. On a turning staircase people also say curved chair lift or curved stair chair — same product, and it is what this page covers.

Can you fit a stair lift to a spiral staircase?

Usually, yes. Spirals and continuous curves are exactly what a custom-fabricated rail is for. Tight spirals put more demand on the rail design, so this is one where the in-home measurement decides the answer rather than a brochure.

Could I use two straight lifts instead?

On some staircases, yes — two straight lifts with a short transfer at the landing, which is often less expensive than one curved lift. It means getting off one lift and onto another, so it suits some riders and not others. We will tell you honestly whether your stairs can take the cheaper option.

How long does a curved stair lift take to arrive?

There is a lead time while the rail is built, and it depends on the manufacturer and the complexity of your staircase. We give you a real timeline at the assessment rather than a guess before it.

What does a curved stair lift cost?

More than a straight one, because of the custom rail — and the length and number of turns move the figure. We do not quote curved stair lifts sight unseen; the staircase has to be measured first. Your free in-home assessment ends with a firm price and no obligation to buy.

Does the lift block the stairs for everyone else?

No. The seat, arms, and footrest fold up when the lift is parked, and it parks out of the walking path at the top or bottom of the rail.
